Kate Nash II
I arrived just as Kate was walking out in her vintage little plaid, pleated, balloon-sleeved dress to sit at her piano. The first thing anyone notices coming into a Kate Nash show a little late is her glowing neon pink name hanging at the back of the stage. The second thing you notice is, of course, her wonderful cockney accent. While a lot of people claim it to be contrived, the rest of us don’t care either way, and simply appreciate it as it is. All we know is that 1) it is cute, and 2) she is incredibly charming.
Feist
Dawn Landes
Our hometown girl was in a really good mood as well, telling us how she loved Louisville, KY…making a heart out of her hands. After the set, I had the opportunity to speak with her & she was so incredibly nice. We have some mutual friends & I was shocked to hear that she actually managed to keep up with what was happening in their lives. I’d mentioned earlier that my friend Katie tried to get me to go to her concert back in 2000, but if I’d have known how cute she was I’d have been there in a heartbeat. It was great to get to see her play & I’m incredibly excited for all of the buzz that has built up around her & I imagine her boots are going to get a lot of use as her names gets spread more & more over the next year….I think this is the start of something very big for Dawn.
Kathleen Edwards
I expected more of a Feist appearance from her promo material, but found more of a college girl who was very spunky and fun on stage. She played with her band mates really well also, dueting guitars & the crowd loved it. She was drinking Woodford & mentioned it was her favorite and that coming to KY is like coming to her beverage mecca.
Sara Bareilles
She approached her piano as though she could have been any student from Bellarmine University adorned in a skirt with suspenders. Sara has the kind of smile that makes every person in the crowd instantly connect to her and feel as though she honestly values them as both a person and a fan. Or maybe it was just me…I have a not-so-secret crush. At one point she told us we were all very attractive…I feel like she was looking at me when she said it though.
Thao Nguyen
Thao thrashed about like a school girl on too much caffeine, looking as cute as the slightly naive little girl you envision when listening to her lyrics like “and we splash our eyes full of chemicals just so there’s none left for little girls” or “we don’t dive, we cannonball”. I frequently speak highly of the on-stage personalities of female singer-songwriters, but to date, Thao has far and away the best stage presence because she has a way of making everyone in the crowd fall a little in love with her. As I looked around, both men and women stood in awe of Thao. From high school kids to grad school graduates and beyond, Thao entranced all of us…
Ingrid Michelson
She looked absolutely beautiful and my pictures do no justice as I had a hard time with the lighting. I’ve mentioned before that the 930 Art Center has quickly become my favorite new venue. There are, however, pluses and minuses. The plus side is the incredible intimacy of the concert experience. The minuses are exclusively as an incompetent photographer…the light is very difficult to deal with there. Nevertheless, Ingrid looked beautiful in a sort of cute geeky way.
